Challenges Facing the Petersburg Borough

Communicating is not so easy.

  • Keeping efficiency in our local government and taxation as low as possible

  • Keeping quality medical care and facilities

  • Maintaining school funding

  • Maintaining the quality of community services that are now provided

  • Diversifying the local economy

  • Minimizing the impact of local government on peoples' lives

  • Keeping the needs of the borough before the Alaska legislature and the Alaska delegation

  • Reducing dependency on outside funding sources to stabilize budgets

  • Minimizing taxation particularly on lower income brackets

  • Planning for and maintaining the local infrastructure.

  • Advocate for north and south ferry service

  • Represent all interests once a decision is made

  • Placing our community in a position to garner funds for our local infrastructure

The last several years have been hard on us for so many different reasons. Unfortunately, a great division has been created that will only serve to make it harder to move forward. Regardless of what choices are made, we stand stronger as a community if we can debate, air differences, vote, and then move forward. It is time for some healing to take place.

"Many forms of government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretend that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." Winston S. Churchill
